The Mirror Test
Captions available
The idea
In the mirror, or rouge, test, a red mark is placed unnoticed on a baby's nose; touching one's own nose shows self-recognition.
In practice
A twenty-month-old seeing the red spot in the mirror and rubbing her own nose.
Where people slip
Most infants recognise themselves between about fifteen and twenty-four months; before that, the reflection is treated as another baby.
