The idea
Dynamic systems theory, developed by Esther Thelen, holds that motor milestones emerge from many interacting systems: the body, the senses, the brain and the environment.
In practice
Walking needing balance, leg strength, stepping, vision and spatial awareness all at once.
Where people slip
No single system causes the milestone. Growth of the cerebellum, myelination and pruning all underlie the skill.
