The idea
Fine motor skills use small muscles for precise tasks, from two-handed reaching at about four months to a thumb-and-forefinger grasp around nine months.
In practice
The ulnar grasp, the whole hand without the thumb, giving way to a pincer grip.
Where people slip
Voluntary grasping replaces the palmar reflex at about six months. Practice and toys at home improve fine motor skill.
