The Housing Continuum

The idea

Housing for older adults runs along a continuum of care. Independent living communities are age-restricted, with maintenance handled and services nearby. Congregate housing offers private units with common areas and some services, but typically no medical care. Assisted living adds meals, housekeeping and help with daily activities for people with physical or cognitive limitations. Nursing homes add medical care: twenty-four-hour supervision, skilled nursing and therapy, sometimes with memory care units for residents with dementia. Continuing care communities offer all these levels on one campus.

In practice

A couple moving into a continuing care community at seventy-five, living independently for years, then moving across campus to assisted living when one needs help.

Where people slip

Many nursing-home stays are short-term rehabilitation rather than permanent residence. Intergenerational living, housing young adults with older adults for companionship, is another option in some countries. Exam items describe a level of need and ask for the setting: medical care points to a nursing home, help with daily tasks to assisted living.
