What Predicts Marital Satisfaction
The idea
John Gottman's "Love Lab" observed couples discussing disagreements while recording their words, expressions and physiology. Several findings have held up. How couples handle conflict matters more than whether they have it. Stable couples keep a ratio of about five positive interactions to every negative one. Psychological soothing helps: empathy, humour, accepting a partner's influence, and repair attempts that stop an argument from escalating. Contempt, criticism, defensiveness and stonewalling predict trouble; Gottman called them marriage killers. Friendship forms the foundation. Gottman's work also produced a more contested claim: that divorce could be predicted from these observations with more than ninety percent accuracy. Heyman and Smith Slep showed that such accuracy drops sharply when prediction equations are tested on new samples, a check called cross-validation, and when the base rate of divorce is considered. Therapy tells a related story: it reduces negative communication more reliably than it builds lasting positive change.
In practice
A couple who argue often but laugh during arguments and repair quickly, and a couple who rarely argue but meet complaints with eye-rolling contempt: the second, not the first, fits the high-risk pattern.
Where people slip
The misconception is that happy couples don't fight. Conflict is normal; contempt and failure to repair are the warning signs. The ninety-percent prediction claim is a caution about statistics: a model fitted to one sample always looks better on that sample than on new couples, so impressive accuracy without cross-validation should be read with extreme caution. Same-sex couples in some studies report higher satisfaction and use more humour and less control in conflict. Wives' lower satisfaction appears mainly in clinical samples rather than community ones. For the exam, know Gottman's ratio and his warning signs, and know that his prediction claims are criticized.
