Teratogens

Captions available

The idea

A teratogen is any disease, drug or environmental agent that can harm a developing embryo or fetus, in body, later health or behaviour.

In practice

Radiation, alcohol, the rubella virus and certain medications, all acting before birth.

Where people slip

A teratogen's harm may not show at birth; some effects appear later, in health or behaviour.
