BMI and Its Limits

Captions available

The idea

Obesity in adults is a BMI of thirty or more, but BMI ignores body composition, and the American Medical Association recommends adding waist-based measures.

In practice

The obesity paradox: people with higher BMI who develop heart disease sometimes surviving longer, found consistently but not universally.

Where people slip

The misconception is that BMI shows whether someone is healthy; thin is not the same as healthy.
