The idea
Physical aggression harms bodies; relational aggression harms relationships through gossip, rumours, exclusion or threats to end a friendship, and is more stable.
In practice

Where people slip
The misconception is that girls are the relationally aggressive sex. A meta-analysis found boys more physically aggressive but only trivial sex differences in indirect aggression.
