Bullying

The idea

Bullying is repeated aggression by someone with more power, whether physical, verbal, or through technology as cyberbullying. Almost thirty-five percent of US children were bullied at least once or twice in the past year, according to a national survey of children's health. Cyberbullying differs from face-to-face bullying in the size of its audience, its anonymity and its permanence.

In practice

A message mocking a classmate, posted anonymously, shared with the whole grade and still online a year later.

Where people slip

The misconception is that bullying is a normal part of growing up. Victims face depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, suicidal ideation, lower achievement and disrupted sleep and eating. Girls, children with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ and refugee children are targeted more. Bullying is defined by repetition and a power imbalance, which separates it from ordinary conflict between equals.
