Women and Children at Work

Captions available

The idea

The number of women earning wages tripled to five million between eighteen seventy and nineteen hundred, and a quarter of them worked in factories.

In practice

Young women, most under twenty-five and many from immigrant families, paid less than men.

Where people slip

Employers assumed women needed no independent living wage. Child labour in factories also tripled over the same thirty years.
