The Knights of Labor

The idea
The Knights of Labor, led by Uriah Stephens and from eighteen seventy-nine by Terence Powderly, sought one big union of all wage workers.
In practice
Skilled and unskilled, men and women, Black and White, all admitted to one organisation.
Where people slip
Only a few occupations, lawyers and bankers among them, were barred. The Knights demanded the eight-hour day and equal pay for women.
