The idea

The Freedmen's Bureau distributed food, reunited families separated by slavery, and established schools, working alongside groups such as the American Missionary Association.

In practice

Fisk, Hampton and Dillard universities, all founded with the Bureau's help.

Where people slip

Opponents attacked it as wasteful federal activism. That charge, government doing too much, returns again and again in this course.
