History of the United States II / Unit 1   USH2 0013 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Representation and the Male Vote

Captions available

The idea

The Fourteenth Amendment ended the three-fifths compromise, counting the whole number of persons in each state for representation in the House.

In practice

A state's House seats cut if it denied the vote to male inhabitants aged twenty-one and over.

Where people slip

Section two protects only male voters. Readmission of each southern state would depend on ratifying the whole amendment.
