History of the United States I / Unit 1   USH1 0009 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Aztec City's Order

Captions available

The idea

Tenochtitlán was well planned, clean and orderly beside European cities of the era: neighbourhoods by occupation, trash collection, two aqueducts of fresh water, and daily bathing.

In practice

Chinampas, floating gardens of reed barges filled with soil, still used at Xochimilco.

Where people slip

Three causeways linked the city to the mainland, built by enslaved people taken from subjugated neighbouring tribes.
