Captions available

The idea

Inca crops were divided in thirds: for the peasants, for the ruler, and for a welfare system supporting those unable to work, with storehouses held for times of need.

In practice

Peasants owing mita labour days on public works such as grass rope bridges.

Where people slip

Human sacrifice was rare compared with the Maya and Aztec. Usual offerings were food, clothing and coca leaves.
