History of the United States I / Unit 1   USH1 0007 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Burning the Codices

Captions available

The idea

Maya records were kept in glyphs in folding codices. In fifteen sixty-two Bishop Diego de Landa burned them, fearing that converts had reverted to their old faith.

In practice

Only a few codices surviving that fire.

Where people slip

When the Spanish arrived in the fifteen twenties they met little organised Maya resistance, the great centres having been abandoned long before.
