The Paxton Boys

Captions available

The idea

Scots-Irish settlers from Paxton formed a mob against the Conestoga, who had lived peacefully alongside settlers, because they viewed all indigenous peoples as savages.

In practice

Six Conestoga murdered, then fourteen more killed and scalped in protective custody at Lancaster.

Where people slip

Governor John Penn offered rewards and none were ever captured or prosecuted, because the Paxton Boys commanded substantial colonial support.
