Captions available

The idea

The Sugar Act of seventeen sixty-four reduced the duty on British molasses from six pence per gallon to three, and intensified enforcement.

In practice

Grenville aiming at rampant smuggling with the French sugar islands.

Where people slip

The lower duty was meant to make compliance cheaper than evasion. The Act cut the tax and colonists objected more, not less.
