Evidence-Based Practice / Unit 22   EBP 3183 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Sampling Is Not Assignment

Captions available

The idea

Random sampling supports generalising a finding outward. Random assignment supports claiming the intervention caused the difference. A study can have either, both or neither.

In practice

A trial with random assignment and a convenience sample: causal within itself, and hard to generalise.

Where people slip

Conflating the two is the most common sampling error in appraisal. Unit 6's causal claim rests on assignment, not on sampling.
