Misconception: Dropouts Only Shrink the Sample
Captions available
The idea
Attrition does not only shrink a study. Where dropout differs between groups or by characteristic, it changes what the comparison means.
In practice
A study whose groups are no longer comparable at the end.
Where people slip
A smaller sample loses precision. An unevenly depleted sample loses the comparison itself, which is the more serious failure.
