A Pareto chart orders causes by how often they occur, so effort can go to the few that account for most of the problem.
In practice
Ranked causes showing that two of nine produce most of the failures.
Where people slip
Frequency is not severity. A rare cause with a catastrophic outcome does not become unimportant by ranking low.
