Kant votes first. A reference is testimony; the maxim "overstate a friend's fitness when he needs the job" universalizes into references nobody trusts — the lying promise's cousin, and a perfect duty stands against it. But Kant's vote settles only what you may not say, not what to do. The utility audit goes wider: the employer's loss from a bad hire, the friend's deeper fall when he fails publicly, the next candidate displaced — the sums lean honest too, though they wobble on guesses. Now the tools this unit added. Name the traits: honesty toward the employer, loyalty and care toward the friend; the vices flanking them: betrayal, complicity — the conflict problem, live. Locate the means: honesty's mean is accurate testimony, not a prosecutor's brief of his flaws; loyalty's mean is standing with him, not lying for him. Practical wisdom reads the particulars: he is struggling, which is exactly why a job built to defeat him is no rescue. And care asks its own question: what does this friendship require — the reference he asked for, or the harder conversation about the search he should be running? The verdicts converge on a shape no single theory drew alone: decline to overstate, tell him first and tell him why, and put the loyalty where it works — into finding the right job. Character is what the rules were always hoping you had.
