The Virtue-and-Care Check

The idea

The virtue-and-care check reads a choice in four steps: name the virtues and vices in play, locate each mean, ask what practical wisdom sees in the particulars, and ask what the relationships require.

In practice

A team lead discovers her closest colleague inflated results in a grant report. Step one, name the traits in play: honesty, loyalty, courage — and the vices waiting: betrayal on one side, complicity on the other. Step two, locate the means. Honesty's mean is not public denunciation at Friday's all-hands; loyalty's mean is not helping bury the numbers. Step three, practical wisdom in the particulars: a first offense by a colleague in crisis differs from a pattern; the funder's audit next month differs from no audit. Suppose it is a first offense, audit coming. Step four, the relationships: what does caring for this colleague require — protecting her from consequences, or refusing to let her become someone who falsifies? The check converges: go to the colleague first, insist the correction comes from her, accompany her when it does. Four steps, no arithmetic — and the answer names persons, not only acts.

Where people slip

The check needs honest trait-naming; call complicity "loyalty" and the method dies at step one.
