The idea
In Book Nine, Satan, disguised as a serpent, tempts Eve with flattery and rhetoric, and she eats. Adam eats "not deceav'd," overcome by her charm, choosing to share her fate. After judgment they leave Eden hand in hand, with Providence their guide.
In practice
Eve deceived, Adam choosing, Eden left.
Where people slip
Adam falls knowingly; Eve is deceived.
