Milton's Grand Style
Captions available
The idea
Milton's grand style is elevated and Latinate: long, suspended sentences, inverted word order, learned allusion and words coined from Latin and Greek, in unrhymed blank verse that was later taken as a model. His second edition explained "why the poem rhymes not."
In practice
Long sentences, Latin diction, no rhyme.
Where people slip
Rhyme was the norm Milton rejected.
