Arms and the Man and Pygmalion
Captions available
The idea
Arms and the Man, of eighteen ninety-four, set in the Serbo-Bulgarian War, mocks romantic ideas of war through Bluntschli, a practical Swiss mercenary. Pygmalion, of nineteen thirteen, shows the phonetics professor Henry Higgins transforming a Cockney flower girl; it became My Fair Lady.
In practice
A practical soldier; a professor and a flower girl.
Where people slip
Pygmalion is Edwardian, not Victorian.
