The idea
Anne Brontë, writing as "Acton Bell," published Agnes Grey in eighteen forty-seven and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall in eighteen forty-eight, about a woman who leaves her abusive, drunken husband. Most critics now consider it one of the first feminist novels.
