The idea

Jane Eyre, published in eighteen forty-seven as by "Currer Bell," is a bildungsroman of a plain governess who loves Mr Rochester of Thornfield Hall. Their wedding is stopped because he is married to Bertha Mason. The anchor says it spoke for women's individuality; it ends, "Reader, I married him."

In practice

Governess, master, a hidden wife.

Where people slip

Jane narrates in the first person.
