Hearing Loss

Captions available

The idea

Students may be hard of hearing or deaf, and mild loss is often overlooked, so teachers observe over time; instruction uses residual hearing, visual cues and inclusion, such as classmates learning a few signs in American Sign Language.

In practice

A student who often asks "what?" and watches faces closely may have mild hearing loss.

Where people slip

Mild loss can pass for inattention.
