The idea
Autism spectrum disorder involves early-appearing deficits in social communication and interaction and restricted, repetitive behaviors or interests: the two domains of the DSM-5, which folded Asperger's disorder into the spectrum.

One autistic student speaks fluently but struggles with conversation; another speaks little.
Where people slip
A spectrum of severity, autism is not the same as intellectual disability.
