Grouping for Acceleration
Captions available
The idea
Cross-grade grouping by subject and special grouping for gifted students both raise achievement, and accelerated students outperform same-age peers who were not accelerated.
In practice
A fourth grader who joins the sixth-grade math class for one period is grouped across grades.
Where people slip
These effects did not vary by ability level, and between-class tracking in secondary schools showed no effect at any level.
