Between-Class and Within-Class Grouping
Captions available
The idea
Research on ability grouping distinguishes between-class grouping, which sorts students into separate classes by ability, from within-class grouping, which forms groups inside one class. Within-class grouping brings small benefits; between-class grouping brings almost none.
In practice
Reading groups within one classroom help; separate tracks for every subject do not.
Where people slip
Grouping works best for specific subjects, with students mixed most of the day.
