Matching a Talent to an Intelligence

Captions available

The idea

To classify a talent in Gardner's scheme, ask what the person works with. Words point to linguistic intelligence; numbers and logic, to logical-mathematical; mental images and space, to spatial; sound and rhythm, to musical; the body and physical skill, to bodily-kinesthetic. Understanding other people is interpersonal; understanding oneself is intrapersonal; recognizing and classifying living things and natural patterns is naturalistic.

In practice

Worked example: a student who masters a dance routine after watching it once is using bodily-kinesthetic intelligence. A student who keeps a reflective journal on their own moods uses intrapersonal intelligence. A student who can picture how a folded paper will look when opened uses spatial intelligence.

Where people slip

Classify by what the talent works with, not by the setting: a student who writes song lyrics may be showing linguistic intelligence as much as musical. Gardner's classroom point is to vary how material is presented, not to label students by one intelligence.
