Captions available

The idea

Alfred Binet and his colleague Simon built the first intelligence test in 1904 and 1905, working for the French government to identify children needing help with the regular curriculum; Lewis Terman later adapted it as the Stanford-Binet.

In practice

A child struggling with the standard lessons is identified for extra support.

Where people slip

The first test's purpose was practical: finding children who needed more help.
