Mastery and Performance Goals
Captions available
The idea
A mastery goal aims to improve and understand, judged against one's own past; a performance goal aims to outperform others, judged against them.
In practice
"I want to finally get fractions" is mastery; "I want the top score" is performance.
Where people slip
The same distinction appears as learning versus performance, task- versus ego-involved, and task- versus ability-focused goals.
