Hunter's Lesson Model

The idea

Madeline Hunter's effective teaching model sequences a lesson in five parts. First prepare students with an anticipatory set that focuses attention and states explicit objectives. Then present the new material in an organized, explicit way. Check for understanding, through responses from every student, choral answers or sampling individuals. Provide guided practice with the teacher close at hand. Finally assign brief independent practice with feedback. Each step tests whether students are ready for the next.

In practice

Worked example: a teacher opens with a puzzle about fractions, presents the rule, has every student show an answer on a card, works problems together, then assigns five on their own.

Where people slip

Checking for understanding is the step that keeps the rest honest: without it, guided practice may build on misunderstanding. The model is teacher-directed, and it can sit alongside student-centered strategies within the same unit.
