Placing an Influence in the System

Captions available

The idea

To place an influence in Bronfenbrenner's model, ask where the child stands. Settings the child takes part in directly, such as family, classroom, peer group and religious group, form the microsystem. Relationships between those settings, such as communication between a parent and a teacher, form the mesosystem. Settings the child never enters but which still shape their life, such as a parent's job or the school board, form the exosystem. Cultural values, laws and economic conditions form the macrosystem, and change over time the chronosystem.

In practice

Worked example: a parent's employer cuts evening shifts, so the parent can now help with homework. The workplace is exosystem; the new homework time changes the microsystem.

Where people slip

The most common slip is calling home or school the mesosystem. Home and school are each microsystems; the mesosystem is only the connection between them, so a missed parent conference is a mesosystem problem rather than a home problem.
