Educational Psychology / Unit 1 EDP 0015 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The Teacher's System
The idea
Teachers work inside nested circles of influence. At the center is the classroom, where teacher and students meet each day. Around it sits a ring of state and local decisions: policy, the mandated curriculum, the materials a district adopts, the technology it provides, and the assessments it requires. The outer ring holds federal law, professional standards and the wider culture. Decisions made in the outer rings reach the classroom without the teacher having made them.
In practice
Worked example: a state adopts a new reading test. That decision sits in the middle ring, yet it changes which lessons a third-grade teacher plans this week.
Where people slip
Place each influence by who decides it, not by how close it feels. A federal law such as IDEA belongs to the outer ring even when it shapes one child's daily plan, and a district's adopted textbook belongs to the middle ring even though it sits on every desk.
