Educational Psychology / Unit 2 EDP 0128 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Action Research
The idea
Action research is practitioners systematically investigating their own practice in order to improve it. It runs as a cycle: identify a problem, define the purpose and consult the research literature, plan an intervention, collect and analyze data on what happened, and plan the next intervention from what was learned. Reflection becomes research when it captures data, asks participants to do something beyond the ordinary, and leads to a public output that others can read.
In practice
Worked example: a teacher notices homework rarely comes back, reads studies on homework design, shortens assignments for a month, and compares return rates before and after.
Where people slip
Action research improves one setting; like a case study, it is not built to generalize. A before-and-after comparison like this one has no control group, so the change could have other causes. The work is best planned with colleagues from the outset.
