Educational Psychology / Unit 13   EDP 1221 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Distributions and Averages

Captions available

The idea

Statistics begins with distributional thinking, since the whole distribution often reveals more than its center; a frequency distribution organizes scores, and the mean, median and mode summarize their center.

In practice

Two classes share a median of seventy, but one bunches its scores and the other spreads them wide.

Where people slip

The mean is pulled toward outliers; the median is not.
