Educational Psychology / Unit 12 EDP 1112 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Offensiveness and Unfair Penalization
Captions available
The idea
Assessment bias takes two forms: offensiveness, content that stereotypes or insults a group, and unfair penalization, content that depends on background experience not taught in class.
In practice
A reading item built on yacht-racing terms penalizes students who have never been sailing.
Where people slip
An item can be inoffensive yet still unfairly penalize, which is the harder bias to spot.
