The Standard Error of Measurement
Captions available
The idea
No score is perfectly precise; the standard error of measurement estimates how much a person's score would vary on retesting, and a relatively large one indicates relatively low reliability.
In practice
A reported score is best read as a band around the number, not an exact point.
Where people slip
Systematic errors, which push every score the same way, reduce validity, not reliability.
