Problem Ownership and I-Messages
Captions available
The idea
Thomas Gordon's Teacher Effectiveness Training begins with problem ownership: whoever is bothered by a behavior owns the problem. It uses active listening, assertive I-messages rather than you-messages, and negotiation to reach consensus.
In practice
"When talking interrupts my explanation, I lose my place," instead of "You're always rude."
Where people slip
Assertive is neither passive nor hostile, as in Canter's assertive discipline.
