Four Management Styles

Captions available

The idea

Crossing warmth with control gives four styles. An authoritarian teacher is cold and highly controlling. An authoritative teacher is warm and highly controlling, making rules together with students and praising consistently. A permissive teacher is warm but exerts little control. A neglectful teacher is cold and exerts little control. To classify a teacher, ask two questions: how warm is the relationship, and how firmly are expectations held?

In practice

Worked example: Teacher A posts rules on day one and enforces them without warmth: authoritarian. Teacher B builds rules with the class, explains them and praises students for following them: authoritative. Teacher C is friendly but lets deadlines slide: permissive. Teacher D rarely engages and rarely sets limits: neglectful.

Where people slip

Authoritative and authoritarian differ in warmth, not in control; both hold firm expectations. Even the authoritative style carries a caution: an over-tight reward system can stifle independent behavior.
