College Composition / Unit 31 CMP 0760 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Comparing Two Arguments
The idea
Comparing two arguments on the same issue means evaluating them on the same terms to decide which makes the stronger case.
In practice
Compare them in order. First, state each main claim, and note where the two disagree. Second, compare their evidence: which offers more reliable and sufficient support? Third, compare their assumptions: which relies on beliefs readers are more likely to share? Fourth, compare their treatment of counterclaims: which acknowledges and answers the other side? Fifth, compare their appeals: which relies on emotion or fallacies in place of evidence? Sixth, decide which is more persuasive for the intended audience, and say why.
Where people slip
The stronger argument is not always the one you agree with. Judge the reasoning, and keep your own view on the issue separate from your evaluation.
