College Composition / Unit 25 CMP 0602 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The Core Elements
The idea
Every MLA works-cited entry is built from the same core elements, arranged in a fixed order.
In practice
Learn the elements in order. First, the author: who is responsible for the work, last name first. Second, the title: what the work is called. Third, the container: the larger work in which a shorter work appears, such as a journal, a website, a database or a streaming service. Fourth, other contributors, such as an editor or translator, when relevant. Fifth, the version, number and publisher, as they apply. Sixth, the publication date. Seventh, the location, such as page numbers or a web address. Elements that do not apply to a source are left out, and each one ends with the punctuation the handbook specifies.
Where people slip
The template replaces memorizing a separate rule for every type of source. When you meet an unusual source, work through the elements in order and include those it has.
