The idea
A direct quotation repeats an author's or speaker's exact words, in quotation marks, with a citation.
In practice
Slight changes are allowed only if they are marked, with brackets for changes and ellipses for omissions.
Where people slip
Quote only the part you need; long quotations can suggest the writer has little to say.
