College Composition / Unit 3   CMP 0052 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Dependent-Clause Fragments

Captions available

The idea

The commonest fragment is a dependent clause, beginning with a word like because, although or which, set off as its own sentence.

In practice

"Enrollment fell. Although tuition stayed the same." The second group has a subject and verb, but although makes it depend on another clause.

Where people slip

Fix it by attaching it to the sentence it explains: "Enrollment fell, although tuition stayed the same."
