Signal Words for Each Pattern

Captions available

The idea

Signal words tell readers which pattern of reasoning is at work and how one idea connects to the next.

In practice

Learn the main families. First, cause: because, since, for this reason, leads to. Second, effect: as a result, consequently, therefore, thus. Third, classification and division: types, kinds, categories, consists of. Fourth, comparison: similarly, likewise, in the same way, alike. Fifth, contrast: however, although, in contrast, conversely. Sixth, analogy and example: for example, in the same way, by extension. Seventh, problem and solution: the problem, a solution, should. Reading for these words shows the pattern of a passage; choosing among them shows readers yours.

Where people slip

A signal word makes a claim about the relationship. Writing therefore where no cause has been shown, or however where nothing contrasts, misleads readers even when the grammar is correct.
