College Composition / Unit 10 CMP 0235 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Accept, Except; Than, Then
Captions available
The idea
Accept means to receive willingly, while except means excluding; than compares, while then marks time.
In practice
"She accepted every gift except mine"; "He is older than his brother, and then he left."
Where people slip
Then in a comparison, as in "better then before," is a common slip that changes the meaning.
